Candida and Yeast Infections- the Effects of Candida Yeast on Children

candida albicans
Hailey Harris asked:

, Candida yeast overgrowth has been a known problem among adults but in recent times, children have captured the attention of medical researchers and doctors specific to this yeast. In fact, new studies are showing that some of the common childhood health conditions could actually be the direct response to Candida albicans. For instance, it is not believed that ear infections, rashes, and even autism may have a link somehow to an overgrowth of Candida yeast.

We know that Candida yeast overgrowth can wreck havoc on an adult’s health so why would it be any different for children. While there could be a number of contributing factors, one that appears to be a major culprit is antibiotics. After all, children are on and off antibiotics for all kinds of problems, which in reality, stimulate the growth of Candida yeast. Over the, the yeast grows to such a level that it begins to attack the body, causing a long list of problems, physically and mentally.

Typically what happens is that as the overproduction of Candida yeast continues, a child’s immune system is compromised and weakened. Soon, the yeast has multiplied to such a point that organs and systems within the body are being sickened. The result of an overproduction of Candida yeast can be seen in the form of hyperactivity, allergies, obesity, depression, learning disabilities, and even self-control.

Although there remains some controversy, many experts now believe there is a direct link between Candida yeast overgrowth and autism. Years ago, one of every two thousand children would develop autism but today, it is one out of every one hundred sixty children. Obviously, something serious is happening that needs to be identified and addressed.

What a number of in-depth studies are now showing is that in autistic children who have high levels of Candida yeast, autistic symptoms are much worse because of the weakened immune system. In this case, the body is working overtime trying to eliminate the harmful yeast, causing other parts of the body to be neglected. Therefore, symptoms associated with autism are exacerbated.

For Candida yeast overgrowth to be eliminated, early diagnosis and treatment are imperative. Otherwise, the immune system will continue to weaken as it also tries to fight off the infection. There is a positive side in that the diagnosis of Candida yeast overgrowth in children is a simple and affordable process. In fact, there are a number of natural remedies that work exceptionally well, starting with change of diet.

It is easy for children in today’s society to eat high quantities of refined sugar and yeast, the two worst things when it comes to Candida. Therefore, parents will need to intervene, teaching their child the right foods to eat so they feel better. Usually, the child would need to go through a two-week cleansing phase. During this time, the diet is strict, which is a little difficult for the child but it is only temporary.

After the initial cleansing period, parents would need to take a positive approach regarding food, showing the child the food can still be enjoyed while also being healthy. As far as the child going on future antibiotics, this is a concern that should be discussed with the doctor. If your child has been diagnosed with having an overproduction of Candida yeast, then the doctor is going to understand the importance of finding alternatives for health.

In most cases, children who have Candida yeast overgrowth but who have been properly treated will go on to live a much healthier and happier life. Remember, if the yeast continues to spiral out of control, it changes to a fungus with roots that will attach itself to the intestinal wall. Eventually as the roots grow and take hold, the mucosal lining of the intestine can be penetrated, allowing dangerous toxins to be released in the bloodstream, which then travels throughout the body.

Being a parent comes with a long list of responsibilities including health. If you have a child who is experiencing fatigue, mood swings, problems with concentration, diarrhea, weight gain, depression, headaches, and other ongoing problems, it could very well be Candida yeast overgrowth. If your child is showing signs of autism, go ahead and request the doctor to do the proper testing to make sure this is not the underlying problem.

How Do You Know If You Have Candida

candida treatment
Gray Rollins asked:

Candida overgrowth has been found to be a frequent complication or even a causative factor in many of today’s illnesses. Treatment is available but diagnosis has to come first.

Yeast is normally found in the mouth, throat, intestines and genitourinary tract. Its presence in the body is not normally problematic and is balanced by a well-functioning immune system and friendly bacteria. If the immune system ceases to function properly, or the level of friendly bacteria in the body becomes too low - as can happen when too many antibiotics are introduced to the body, when steroids are used, when everyday stress becomes overwhelming or with poor diet choices - then Candida overgrowth may occur.

Someone with an overgrowth of yeast can experience any number of unpleasant symptoms such as a genital yeast infection, thrush in the mouth, fatigue, skin rash, depression and anxiety. The symptoms of Candida overgrowth are frequently treated with anti-fungal remedies. Even with these remedies, however, if your diet is not changed to create an environment within the body to prohibit the overgrowth of Candida, relief is sure to be temporary, and problem symptoms will return.

As Candida is a normal component of the body’s natural flora, using conventional laboratory testing to determine the need for treatment isn’t always helpful, and generally can only help to diagnose the late stages of a yeast infection. Current methodologies for testing include checking for the presence of yeast cells in the urine, saliva and stool, or the gut fermentation test which involves testing the blood for alcohol, dosing the patient with sugar and testing their blood again - if alcohol shows up in their blood it is assumed it has occurred from fermentation from the yeast in their gut.

It is also difficult to diagnose Candida overgrowth for a number of reasons. It shares symptoms with other conditions such as gluten intolerance and hypothyroid - and any combination of these can be present simultaneously, adding to the difficulty of diagnosis.

Another factor is that available tests are able to recognize only a few of the 150 known strains of Candida and the cells in the specimen may die while waiting for analysis resulting in a false “normal” result. Along with the test, then, other factors have to be considered before a diagnosis can be made. The doctor must consider if the patient has a history of factors that are known to result in Candida infections and establish that there are symptoms present associated with it. Additionally, the knowledgeable physician will experiment with dietary and antifungal therapy to see if the there are reactions consistent with Candida overgrowth. http://www.candidarelief.com/candidatest/

Both herbal remedies and prescribed medications can be helpful in treating a yeast infection along with dietary and lifestyle changes. Check with your herbalist as to dose, mode of use and formulations. For antifungal remedies not available over the counter check with your doctor about side effects, costs and availability.

Researchers are working on discovering better testing protocols to establish earlier the need for treatment.

Keeping your immune system, “friendly” bacteria, and Candida in proper balance is possible with a combination of proactive changes; by altering your current diet, and with the responsible use of medicinal or herbal treatments you can maintain a healthy body.

How Much Do you Know About Candida and Autism?

candida albicans
Ericka Smith asked:

How much do you know about CANDIDA and Autism?

By Ericka Smith

www.FruitVegetableJuicers.com

Candida albicans: a parasitic fungus that can infect the mouth or the skin or the intestines or the vagina.” WordNet 3.0 2006 Princeton University.

An environment that is acidic is the perfect playground for fungus to thrive and grow. That is exactly why an acidic atmosphere can produce an overgrowth of candida and maintain it forever.

Candida albicans is a yeast fungus which, under ordinary circumstances, lives in balance with all of the other micro-organisms in the body. Candida albicans survives by living on high sugar levels and is normally kept in line by the other micro-organisms in the body, especially the bacteria Lactobacilli.

If a person’s immune system is weakened by stress, illness or antibiotics, which destroy the helpful organism Lactobacilli, Candida can thrive and excess levels of sugar in the body will worsen your situation.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT CANDIDA, IT’S ACIDITY.

All sugars are acidic. If we change or reduce the foods we eat, we eliminate the problem. So how can we treat an over-acid condition and free ourselves of an over growth of Candida? Drink alkaline water.

“The pH level of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. Extended acid imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated…Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced internal alkaline environment. A chronically over-acidic pH corrodes body tissue, slowly eating into the 60,000 miles of veins and arteries like acid eating into marble. If left unchecked, it will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. ( )…Over-acidification interferes with life itself leading to all sickness and disease!”

CANDIDA AND IT’S AFFECT ON AUTISM

According to Stephen M. Edelson PhD., of the Center for the Study of Autism in Salem, Oregon, an overgrowth of yeast releases toxins into the body that impair the central nervous and immune systems.

“Some of the behavior problems which have been linked to an overgrowth of candida albicans include: confusion, hyperactivity, short attention span, lethargy, irritability, and aggression. Health problems can include: headaches, stomachaches, constipation, gas pains, fatigue, and depression. These problems are often worse during damp and/or muggy days and in moldy places. Additionally, exposure to perfumes and insecticides can worsen the condition.

Dr. William Shaw has been conducting important research on yeast and its effects on autistic individuals. He recently discovered unusual microbial metabolites in the urine of autistic children who responded remarkably well to anti-fungal treatments.”

For some individuals over-the-counter medication is prescribed to help eliminate the problems caused by Candida. However, there are other non-medical ways to rid your body of candida and excess acidity.

A SAFE WAY TO TREAT CANDIDA.Drink alkaline ionized water.

Alkaline ionized water neutralizes acids and helps to flush them from the system while treating the root cause of most disorders…Over-Acidity.

Ionized water is an energy-rich, antioxidant-rich, free radical fighting water produced from ordinary tap water. As your tap water passes through a life ionizer, it is divided into two streams, one alkaline and the other acidiic. When it gets to your glass it is micro-clustered for easy absorption and maximum hydration.

The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Candida Link - Fact Or Fiction?

candida symptoms
Jane Symms asked:

There are many debates, which have been ongoing for a while, with regard to whether there is an irritable bowel syndrome candida connection.

Certainly if you were to look at both these ailments closely you would see that they appear to share a number of the same symptoms and can effect the same area of the body.

In fact, it has been discovered that people who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are often are deficient in probiotics (friendly bacteria) from their digestive system, and the same has been found to be true for those suffering from a candida overgrowth.

As these friendly bacteria are vital for a healthy digestive system, maintaining a healthy immune system and keeping infection at bay any reduction in their volume should be taken seriously.

One of the reasons that candida can gain a foothold and start to multiply is not having a sufficient volume of “good” bacteria in the GI tract to suppress the Candida (yeast). It is then given an opportunity to grow unhindered.

Many people who have been diagnosed either with IBS or Candida will often need to alter their diet in order to help alleviate their symptoms.

Two of the main items that both groups of people eliminate from their diets are foods containing sugars and yeast, both of which help promote candida growth, and can impact on IBS symptoms.

Health professionals would suggest that there does not seem to be a relationship between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Candida.

They maintain the people at risk from candida are those who immune system has become suppressed either through illness or through the long term effects of taking particular kinds of medication.

However, this opinion is contradicted by many personal stores written in blogs and forums online that tell of how a person has improved their own symptoms by treating their IBS as if it was a candida infection.

At present there is no firm evidence to show what actually causes a person to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However people who have suffered from both Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Candida have found that when diagnosed and then treated for Candida they find that they experience a reduction in their Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms.

So, until there is conclusive proof either way, it might be sensible to adopt a lifestyle that embraces the best of both candida and IBS natural treatments.

This would include changing your diet, reducing your intake of specific foods, including those containing sugar and yeast, and increasing your levels of good bacteria by including a probiotic supplement.

So, even if the irritable bowel syndrome candida link is not yet proven by conventional medicine, there are steps you can take immediately to reduce symptoms.

How To Spot A Candida Symptom - And What To Do About It?

candida symptoms
Jane Symms asked:

When a person suffers with a candida overgrowth, there is generally more than one candida symptom to look out for. An infection usually creates multiple symptoms, which may seem unrelated to a yeast infection, and this can make it harder for it to be diagnosed.

Candida normally resides in the moist and warm areas of the body, and an infection will generally occur in the mouth, vagina, nose or the respiratory system, although it can sometimes also attack the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract too.

The symptoms that are often associated with candida are:

1. Feeling drained and fatigued

2. Abdominal pain, bloating usually accompanied by diarrhea or constipation. This is mostly linked to the release of carbon dioxide and alcohol when the candida yeast ferments sugar.

3. There seems to often be an increased sensitivity to antigens, so that a person reacts to food and airborne particles that they would have previously not had a reaction to. This can cause inflammation, and effect other organs in the body.

4. There can be damage to the bowel wall, which may lead to “leaky gut”, which can cause additional toxins to be released into the bloodstream, as well as cause food intolerance and effect the bodies ability to absorb nutrients.

Also, candida has been shown to release a cocktail of dozens of toxins, that can have many different effects on the body and the major organ’s, including auto immune disorders, metabolic abnormalities and even psychological problems.

Other symptoms that can be a more obvious sign of candida infections include:

- Patches of skin that are irritated, and there may be evidence of white pustules

- Vaginal itching and a burning sensation and its often painful to have intercourse. There may also be a “white, thick, cheesy” discharge and unusual menstrual cramping and pain.

- Urinary tract infections that keep reoccurring, even after treatment

- Feeling pain when urinating

- There may be visible mucus in the stool

- Difficulty swallowing

- Bleeding gums, a dry or cracked tongue and a dry mouth

- Heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion

- A loss of concentration, headaches, depression and sometimes mood swings and anxiety.

- There can also be swelling and pain in the joints

This is not a full and comprehensive list of symptoms, as others become apparent as infection progresses that are more severe.

Continue reading to discover how to sign up for the free relieving Candida newsletter, and find out how to identify and combat the signs and symptoms of a candida infection.

If you suspect that you have a candida infection then you should make an appointment to see a medical professional. Although, ensure that you have kept a close track of the symptoms you have been experiencing, as there are a number of other conditions that can cause many of the same symptoms of candida, and a wrong diagnosis can lead to a worsening infection.

No diagnosis can be made if only one candida symptom is considered on its own. The sufferer needs to be clear about all their symptoms to ensure an effective diagnosis.
